I'm not completely set on where I'm going with my theme. After reading the blogs from the Master List, I feel like I need to think of a different direction to go with food. Maybe I'll write about how food makes people feel good. Or maybe about the overweight issues America is facing and how we can do something about it. Or maybe the total opposite of that, and why mainly girls in America are starving themselves.
I don't know. Feedback anyone?
Just read your post. I think either one of your last two directions would be great. Do overweight children make overweight adults? What are the health risks? Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol just to name a few. Can you have a healthy diet without going broke? What are the food companies putting in their products? Maybe you can post the nutritional value of something that is printed on the box. Is being overweight due to the fact that people just can't find the time to make home cooked meals? Let's not forget exercise or the lack of it. Does anyone walk anymore when they can drive instead?
ReplyDeleteAbout girls starving themselves? Is it associated with all the ads they are exposed to? The models? Movie stars? Thin is in??? All related to body image and how others see you.
Hope this helps in some way. Good luck.
For the memoir you need to think of something connected to your personal life that involves food in some way. It could be any significant scene that involves the making or getting or eating of food. It could be about learning to grow vegetables or raise chickens or catch fish or make lasagna. It could be about how food connects you to your family or your culture. You should try to root it in something specific, some specific event or person or object. Also think about how this bit of your personal history might connect to a reader's experience, what universal themes or experiences does your memoir intersect with. You might not know exactly what this is until you are in the midst of writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to post a sample student essay that connects to food--also try looking through the This I Believe site for food essays (or Brevity).
